Transparent PNG showing white? Check this first
The transparency is usually still in the PNG; many viewers and editors display transparent areas as white or a checkerboard, so open the file in a browser or another editor to verify it and keep it as PNG or WebP, because converting to JPG flattens transparency onto white.
Open the Image Converter — free →Some apps do not show alpha transparency. They paint a white background behind the image, or they use a viewer that ignores the alpha channel. A white background in a preview does not necessarily mean the PNG lost its transparent pixels. A checkerboard pattern is one common way editors show transparency.
Verify it. Drag the PNG into a browser window. In many browsers, transparent areas show the page background. You can also open it in an editor that shows alpha, such as GIMP or Photoshop, and check the layer or channels panel. If the checkerboard is there, the file still has transparency.
1. Open the PNG in a browser or an editor with alpha support. 2. Check for a checkerboard or page background showing through. 3. In an editor, look at the Layers or Channels panel for an alpha channel. 4. If you need a different format, choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency. 5. Do not choose JPG if you need transparency; JPG has no alpha channel and will fill transparent areas with white or another solid color.
Converting a transparent PNG to JPG will flatten it onto a solid background, usually white. Some online converters may also flatten transparency when resizing or applying effects. If the PNG shows white in one app but a checkerboard in another, trust the app that supports alpha and keep a copy in PNG or WebP.
